Yesterday, I had the pleasure of presenting a keynote speech at The Fourth National Summit on Promoting Well-being and Resilience in Healthcare Professionals, organized by The Ohio State University. This summit addressed a critical issue: supporting the well-being of healthcare professionals, whose roles often come with unique pressures and high levels of responsibility. Healthcare professionals work tirelessly to care for others, but in doing so, they face significant mental, emotional, and physical challenges that can lead to burnout and reduced job satisfaction. In my keynote, I discussed the remarkable effects of recreational dance on promoting well-being and resilience—a concept that has been central to my research and practice as Doctor Dance.

The Importance of Promoting Well-being and Resilience in Healthcare

Healthcare professionals operate in an environment that requires them to manage long hours, high stress, and emotional strain on a regular basis. These pressures can take a toll on their mental and physical health, ultimately affecting their performance and patient outcomes. Promoting resilience is essential for helping healthcare professionals stay balanced and engaged in their work, but how can recreational dance play a role in this?

In my keynote, I shared evidence illustrating the powerful benefits of dance in terms of social connection, cognitive flexibility, and emotional release. These elements combine to make dance an effective tool for fostering resilience in a healthcare setting.

Dance: The Secret Ingredient for Building Strong Social Bonds

Research shows that when people dance together, they develop a greater sense of connection. This sense of connection translates to real-life benefits, with people reporting higher levels of trust, increased psychological alignment, and even more pro-social behavior after dancing together.

In a healthcare environment, these bonds are essential. When healthcare professionals connect with each other on a deeper level, they create a support network that can help them navigate the unique challenges they face. Dance builds trust and camaraderie among colleagues, fostering an environment where people feel psychologically safe and are more likely to reach out for help when needed. This type of connection is a cornerstone of resilience.

Enhanced Thinking and Problem-Solving: Dance as a Mental Workout

In healthcare, mental agility is key. Engaging in dance not only moves the body but also breaks people out of rigid ways of thinking. This flexibility is invaluable for healthcare workers who need to adapt quickly to changing situations and think creatively under pressure.

By embracing the freedom of movement and rhythm in dance, healthcare professionals can enhance their problem-solving abilities. This cognitive flexibility allows them to navigate high-stress situations with greater ease, making them more resilient in the face of uncertainty.

Emotional Release and Catharsis: Dance as a Safe Outlet

The emotional strain of healthcare work can accumulate over time, and finding a safe outlet is critical. Dance offers a cathartic experience, enabling people to release pent-up emotions and relieve stress. This can prevent emotional exhaustion and provide balance, allowing healthcare professionals to carry on with a renewed sense of purpose and empathy. Dance helps them let go of what weighs them down, offering an emotional reset that is crucial for sustaining well-being.

Introducing the Move-Assure Dance for Mental Wellbeing Programme

One of the exciting practical interventions I shared during the keynote was our Move-Assure Dance for Mental Wellbeing programme. Created by myself, Lindsey Lovatt (a mental health specialist and occupational therapist), and Dame Darcey Bussell (former principal ballerina with the Royal Ballet Company), Move-Assure combines the power of dance and mental well-being practices to help people reclaim their mental health.

The programme consists of two main components: the Dance Element and the Mental Wellbeing Element. With 60 fun, pre-recorded dance sessions, Move-Assure allows healthcare professionals to engage in short, accessible sessions across a variety of dance styles. It’s not about fitness or perfection; it’s about enjoying movement and stimulating positive emotions. The sessions are easy to follow, led by Dame Darcey Bussell and myself, and designed to build up gradually over 20 weeks.

The Mental Wellbeing Element includes practical advice, tips, and tools to help individuals track and support their mental well-being. Features like a weekly well-being toolkit, weekly coaching, and a mental well-being quiz help participants monitor their progress and build resilience in a structured, supportive way.

Move-Assure isn’t a workout—it’s a wellbeing journey designed to help healthcare professionals find balance, connection, and joy. It’s an ideal tool for integrating well-being into the everyday lives of healthcare workers, offering both the science and the practice of well-being.

Dance as a Practical Pathway to Resilience

These components—social connection, cognitive flexibility, emotional release, and structured mental well-being support—are directly aligned with the goals of resilience-building programs in healthcare. Recreational dance, particularly through the Move-Assure programme, goes beyond being just a fun activity. It provides healthcare professionals with the tools to support their mental, physical, and emotional well-being, helping them handle the high-stakes demands of their profession.

At the end of the day, the positive impact of dance doesn’t stop on the dance floor. It creates a ripple effect, fostering a healthier, more resilient healthcare workforce. Dance is more than just movement—it’s a pathway to a better, more balanced life. And I encourage healthcare professionals everywhere to consider making it a part of their resilience toolkit.
